About us

The European Network Against Arms Trade (ENAAT) is an informal self-organising network of peace groups, founded in 1984 at an international conference in the Netherlands and seeking to limit or stop the international arms trade through research, publication, advocacy and public campaigning.

ENAAT’s project ‘disarming the European project’ monitors developments at EU level, in particular policies allocating European funds to the arms industry.

Mission

Members

ENAAT is an informal network of 21 European peace groups based in 14 European countries opposing arms trade and militarisation. Members conduct their own research and national campaigns, and cooperate on an ad-hoc basis at transnational level. They meet every year upon invitation of one the members, in order to discuss arms export policies, strategies for common action and developments in the military industry.

Vision

ENAAT members consider the arms trade to be a threat to peace and security as well as to social and climate justice, and the arms industry as a driving force behind increasing military exports and expenditure.

Although European governments claim not to export arms to countries at war or violating human rights, European arms are sold all over the world with very few restrictions.Arms companies aggressively promote sales at arms fairs all over the world to attract new customers to their deadly products. Many governments have special arms promotion agencies to support their industries. Arms trade has as much to do with profit and trade as with foreign policy and military strategy. Arms trade is often connected to corruption and bribes.

Moreover, the links between militarisation and the arms race on the one hand, and climate change and environmental degradation on the other, are now being increasingly documented.
ENAAT members’ activities range from campaigns against the financing of arms exports by governments, banks and pension funds, to lobbying for stricter regulation of arms exports, research into specific arms companies and public campaigning against military spending or arms exports to war zones or dictatorships. ENAAT and several of its members are involved in the Arms, Militarism and Climate Justice working group.
